4D Studio and Intermediate Sculpture: The pictures

I made some modifications to the Zombie Barbie today and took a few low quality pictures so I could post before 5 pm today. Here she is, no longer naked but dressed up for the prom. I deactivated the Esty sales page and will take new and better pictures next week when I I have time to drag my lights and soft-box out.

Intermediate Sculpture: Final Thoughts

The Art Doll project has come it's 11 week close and will soon start on a new phase. So far it has cost ca. $200 dollars but several of the created items can be reused over and over.

There is not much that can be shown for the effort because most of what was created was skill in working with my materials and you just can't take a picture of that.

The heads are amazing, the compasses are cool and the pith helmet and goggles are nonexistent and for the time being they will remain so. I think the sculpted heads are great and will be my main emphasis for the time being, I plan to sell unpainted heads without bodies as well as finished head mounted on bodies.

Over all I am very happy with my work this quarter and feel like I learned a lot and Got to meet a lot of nice people.

Intermediate Sculpture: one head, a zombie

Can we talk about stupidity for a moment...I left both my molds at school on Friday; then on Saturday morning it was all locked up and nosecurity or maintenance people to let me into the annex. Dumbest part I didn't take a picture of the cat girl head.

4D Studio: My Website troubles

I appear to have forgotten a step in the process and that is why the Domain didn't transfer yet, I think...

Intermediate Sculpture: Failed Mailing attempt

I tried to send a compass through the mail and it failed to arrive, so I will have to try other packaging options.

4D Studio: The board game is in progress

Things are going good with 'Alien Rampage' and it should be ready for the critique on time.

4D: Alien Rampage

The board game I am making involves an alien space ship crashes and you are it's crew who now need to escape before the reactor explodes and burns you all with atomic hellfire. It's a flat out race with a time limit.

The board is coming together nicely but it does seem like I spend a lot of my time watching glue dry, wax cool or silicone to cure.

4D Studio: My Story

I'm having a few unexpected issues with this project, emotionally not technically, but here goes.

I am going to tell a little about how I started working with wood, it will include a story from my childhood and some discussion of my grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather, on my mothers side. I expect to film 30 to 90 minutes and cut it down to 3-5 minutes for class and a longer 10 or 12 minute version to keep for the family such as it is.

4D Studio Stop Motion Animation Project

This is my final video for my Animation Project. It is far less that my original vision but I am still pleased with it; I can take what I learned and pout it into my next Stop Motion project.

Some things I learned are to not use Stikfas for this, they are a pain, their hands break and their arms fall off and the most inopportune time possible. I also need to slow the moves and make it more realistic.

Over all I'm very pleased with the outcome.

If you are wondering what the fight it about he grabbed her ass, the dirty perv...

Stop Motion Animation

Stop motion animation is not as easy as it looks, It's still kinda fun though and I'm getting close to finishing my project and I hope everybody likes it.

4D Studio Project 3: Animation

I will be using Stikfas to create a romantic scene, the male with be a pirate singing ‘You Are My Sunshine’ (using Magpie Killjoy’s version) to the female, a fairy, who is being visibly wooed, while a skeleton plays a lute in the background. Below you will find some links to Youtube videos shwoing other people using Stikfas aniamation

Intermediate Sculpture: My Project Proposal

Andrew Kolb

Proposal for Intermediate Sculpture

Steam Punk Accessories for 11.5” and 14” dolls

Steam Punk, literature, art and costuming is very popular now and I personally enjoy participating in it and I agree with the sentiments of the movement, making things by hand or with simple machines. Basically Steam Punk is an alternate vision of the Victorian era, where Steam power is the predominate form of energy. I feel like the full size costuming market for Steam Punk accessories is saturated right now but I have not seen anyone making these things for dolls.

I will be working alone on this as that is how I best work.

My goals are to create a selection of objects that I can make multiple casts from.

I will cast in Polyester Resin, Epoxy and possibly pewter.

I will use Silicon and Plaster of Paris to make my molds.

I will sculpt the object from plumber’s epoxy, Fimo, Scuply, Styrofoam or other material as needed.

My secondary goal is to sell one or more of the objects I create before the class ends.

To reach this goal I will use Etsy and EBay to sell my products

I will also consider using something like Google Ad Words to draw attention to my products.

I believe I will be able to accomplish both goals within the allotted time frame.

There are no major hazards other than the need to be careful with the Resin and epoxies; and there will be nothing inappropriate for general viewing.

4D Studio: What is 4D?

I had some trouble figuring out what 4d is compared to what we are doing in this class. It seems that some people use the term 4D to describe their work as superior. I believe that for our purposes the fourth dimension can be anything above 3D such as Time, Movement, or Sound. This can include kinetic sculpture, animation and who know what else, it’s art and it’s subjective to the creator and the viewer

Yay!

I'm sorta sad it's over but I do like the grade I got... an A

maybe I'll get to take the advanced sculpture some day!

Final Project Finally Finished

The young ball boy is done, he is articulated and equipped with a slingshot and marbles so he can get into all kinds of mischief. For now he will have a happy home in my garage ith all my other assorted sports equipment. Since the other two large pieces I put out for the public to enjo have fone missing I am a bit reluctant to do the same with the ball boy.

It took hard work and critical thinking skills to finish this project and I am excited about how it turned out.

The Giant Bead Doll is nearly finished!

With much hard work and not a small amount of re-work the sports bead doll is about ready to display, I'm just waiting for glue to cure. There is no installation plan yet for him but there may be a plan in the future.

More sadness for the Forest People

the second installed piece is now missing as well, I hope he is being loved and has a nice ourdoor home in somebody's garden.

A Sad Day

A sad day, my little forest person has gone missing, she was very hard to see from the trail, but I tromped through the poison ivy to make sure, and she is gone, I hope who ever took her did so out of love and not malice.

The Final Project Proposal

For this project I propose to make a large simi articulated human simulacrum made from sporting goods such as baseballs, softballs, golf balls and tennis balls.
While I am not a huge sports fan myself there are many sports related memories some I wish to forget but many I hold close to my heart. My father, who passed away in 1989 was a baseball fanatic, he umpired for high school, collage and other non-professional baseball games and a few high school soft balls games; knew the rule book backwards and forwards; he truly loved the game. My first real girlfriend played tennis and I still occasionally watch a tennis match or two.

I enjoy a putt putt game every once in a while and sometimes take my three golf clubs to Milt’s driving range and wack a few balls down range as far as I can.

My mother will help me to look for supplies at the thrift stores, though in early spring used balls are hard to find. But most of the construction I will do alone, that is how I like to work and I find solace is working with tools and crafting things with my hands.

This project will allow me to do some of my favorite things, working with tools and making things. Mainly I will be using a drill, paint and maybe a few other tools. I hope to get started right away. I plan to work on this project at home and at school with some designed work being done where ever I am and have time.

I am expecting this project to cost between $30 and $50 as I have some of the materials already, in fact I may have a lot of the materials already if I can only find them in my garage, I should have no difficulty building this project but it may take a small amount of experimentation.

The safety factors of this project are low, just that it is heavy and will be somewhat floppy, but it will pose no danger other than to small children who have inattentive parents.

It is my opinion that while this simulacrum will not be dressed it will not look enough like a human to cause anyone to be uncomfortable looking at it.

Hunting the, Perhaps, Not So Mythical Plains Walrus

When setting out to hunt a walrus of the plains

one first starts with camouflage so to better hide.

A bow and arrow work best, hand crafted or how ever obtained

then, disguised you sneak up on their left side

Care should be taken to avoid the tusks

for a terrible wound would ruin your hunt.

To stalk a plain’s walrus go out just about dusk

and listen for the distinctive snuffle and grunt.

Then get close to it by cautiously sneaking

Walk nice and slow, be sure to keep you disguise in place

you must hold perfectly still when the walrus is peeking

also, you should be ready to run if that’s the case

When it is all just right, take your shot

aiming just behind the left tusk

it’s the plains walrus’s only soft spot.

Project 3: work progressing

This is one of the treasures I made to hide, the other treasures are secret so you will have to wait a few years to find out what they are.

Some how I didn't take a single picture while I was working on the wooden forest people, despite having a camera on my belt and being a PHOTOGRAPHER. Some days I wonder about myself.

Project 3 Public Sculpture

I am proposing to make one or more large (up to 24") wooden figures that will have a secret compartment holding some yet to be determined prize. These figures will be made of all natural material that will biodegrade over the coming years. I will put the figures in a wooded area, possibly at the school.

I am going to try and come up with some type of natural glue, possible bee's wax and jute fibers, or I may just use a water based commercial wood glue.

The prize will not be money but other things that I am still working on.

Trouble with artistic vision

My project has evolved significantly since inception. I reread the project description and decided to not work with clay on this one after all; instead I am making a Walrus Hunting Disguise from leather, Fimo, feathers, sinew and possible other items as needed. This is something I have been thinking about making from many months. There is an example of this type of Inuit hunting disguise at the Joslyn Art Museum in the Native American Section. I should be able to finish the in just a few days.

A clarification on Project 2

This idea is not to make a traditional 'Face Jug' but rather something different; a jug with a face but not a jug that is a face, or a face that is a jug. I'm attaching an example of what I am not doing. my sketching skills are pretty poor but I'll try to have something on Tuesday.

Project 2, Student art show submission, the Nekked Jug

My proposal for this project is a Nekked Jug. It will be small, cream pitcher with a woman's face for the spout, and a nude female body for the handle. The cream will pour out the open mouth of the face.

The last stage of my head

This is it, the finished product, well it still has to be cut off the armature, scooped out, stuck back together and fired but this is it! the eyes, nose eyes and mouth have been fixed and my awesome hair has been added.

My Amazing Head

This the the middle stage of creating my head, there is still a lot to do.

Work on the head is coming along nicely

I'm having better luck and more fun recreating my amazing noggin than I thought I would. It hasn't been easy, especially the eyes. The eye lids and ears are my next area I'm planing on working.

What is Sculpture?

Defining art is problematic as all art is subjective to one's own point of view.

As a Noun: Sculpture is a work of three dimensional art.

As a Verb: Sculpture is the act of creating a 3d work of art, to sculpt an object out of real, tangible material.

Common materials used are stone, clay, wood, metal or plastic; but sculpture is not limited to these materials or even to a single material.

For example we have Degas 'Little Dancer'. it is cast in bronze an also has fabric and ribbon to enhance the form.

Sculpture is not limited to replicating a known form but can take on any form such as the abstract sculpture is the courtyard of Fluor Daniel Engineering Building at Clemson University.

Sculptures are these things and they are so much more.

My Head, Heroic, Facing East

I think I will not have any accessories other than what I normally have, although I may add real pieces to the finished head at some point. I will desaturated a few of these photos and print them on the laser printer and have them ready for Tuesday.

Project #1 Modeling My Self Portrait in Clay

How to describe my head, or the making of it from clay? I intend to include all of it, my awesome goatee, my glasses, my pony tail and also my receding hair line. As to the expression I will have it is somewhat hard to say. I’m thinking of something to represent my working class background.

Something stoic, maybe with accessories, like goggles, and a dust mask, things I personally wear whilst crafting things of woods. The accessories might have to be separate pieces that can be glued on after they have been fired.

Pictures will come later after I have solidified my ideas somewhat.
